- Osteoarthritis- This is where there is a loss of cartilage in the joints. The breaking cartilage thickens the bones causing pain and stiffness. In severe cases, where non-surgical shoulder treatments are not effective, surgeries may be performed.
- Shoulder fractures- fractures in the shoulder commonly involve the clavicle (collarbone), humerus (upper arm bone) or the scapula (shoulder blade). Fractures will often cause severe pain, swelling, and bruising in the shoulder area. Treatment should be sought out immediately.
Possible Treatments May Include:
Injections
Injections help to ease pain and reduce inflammation in the affected area. Injections such as Cortisone are commonly administered to patients suffering from shoulder problems at the joint.
Physical Therapy
Orthopedic shoulder physical therapy will rehabilitate injuries in the muscles, bones, joints, ligaments and tendons. Exercises aid in the strengthening, increase in motion and reducing of swelling of the ailment.
Surgical Options
Depending on the severity of the injury, surgery options can range from a minimally invasive procedure to a total shoulder replacement.
Medications
Often times anti-inflammatory and pain medications are used alongside another form of treatment such as physical therapy.
